At the moment I'm working on a selection of abstract photos I made years ago while spending time with my oldest daughter exploring tide pools during low tide at Shell Beach on the central coast of California. I've already rendered 349 of these into an hour long movie featuring the songs of whales that feels good to watch and contemplate the beauty of what is now locally being threatened by more harm from the industrial machinations of greed and disrespect.

At the moment my assemblages seem to be looking at the whole death-and-decay theme. Once you’re over 80, this is where your thoughts take you. What is giving me joy in my creative work at the moment? Ah, when something WORKS, turns out the way you’d hoped, says what you’d wanted to say, that’s the delight and the joy.

Objects which I’ve had lying around for years turn out to be just exactly what I needed for the thing I’m trying to make.

Right now I'm working on a large, for me, landscape painting of trees on Paora Road. I head out the drive and turn left onto South Road, and Paora is the first turn on the right. I’ve got a particularly nice Belgian linen canvas to paint on. I like looking at stuff. I find Viridian green and Burnt Umber are quite inspiring. I seem to be more inspired by my materials than by any specific subject matter. It’s difficult to define, and these things are symbiotic I guess. I push coloured mud around innit?
